In a bid to step outside of her comfort zone and take a holiday from her corporate life as a 28-year-old Partner in a headhunting firm, Lucy Feltham decides hang up her suit and indulge a lifelong interest in the secret and little-understood communities of Great Britain. Using the alphabet as the backbone to her journey, she spends a year investigating 26 subcultures, from Aristocrats, Battle Re-enactors and Circus Performers to Xtreme Sport Fanatics, Yogi's and 'Zeitgeist' Political Activists.Different Folks charts Lucy’s adventure.
Over the course of the next year she lives with each group, immersing herself in their social rituals and customs and often finding herself in compromising situations; from swimming naked with lawyers and vets, to casting spells with teachers and IT consultants. Whether dressed in tight latex and drinking with self- proclaimed vampires or fighting the undead in an epic LARP battle, she goes deep into communities often heard about, but very seldom seen.
Different Folks is written from the first-hand perspective of someone willing to give absolutely anything a go, from naked karaoke, to calling down the corners for a Wiccan ritual. It tells of lessons learnt; of the importance of community in an increasingly isolating society; of the unquenchable human thirst for a sense of belonging; and of the misguided judgment we place in our own prejudice.
Lucy Feltham is a Partner in the Executive Search firm, Wilton & Bain and has a rich network of thousands of Tech Executives, many of whom she has placed in their current positions. Having grown up between Bristol and London, Lucy now lives and works in San Francisco where she manages the firms West Coast operations.
