Hitler’s Gangster: The Extraordinary Crimes of Alfred Naujocks

Murderer, kidnapper, spy, forger, pimp—Alfred Naujocks was all these—committing these crimes in the service of Hitler’s SS. Recruited to the elite SS intelligence service, Naujocks’ efficiency as a hit man brought him close to Reinhard Heydrich—the perfect Nazi—and saw him involved in some of the most daring clandestine plots of the Second World War. Drawing on wartime interrogations uncovered in secret Security Service archives, acclaimed true crime historian Tim Newark reveals the truth behind some sensational events.

  • How Hitler defeated Stalin with a typewriter—the devastating plot that decimated Stalin’s army before war even began
  • · The faked frontier attack that began the Second World War
  • · The kidnapping of British spies that crippled the Allied intelligence service in Nazi-occupied Europe
  • · The plan to flood Britain and America with millions of pounds of forged bank notes
  • · A bugged brothel to overhear the secrets of foreign diplomats and German generals

The cunning Alfred Naujocks, young and good-looking, was at the heart of all these murderous plots and managed to steer clear of rival intrigues until he too became a victim of Nazi deception and back-stabbing. A truly remarkable story of crime and war that has never been fully told before.

For all those readers that love tales of wartime intrigue and double-dealing, such as Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat, Tim Newark’s latest book, Hitler’s Gangster, is a must.

‘It is evident that over a period of many years, Naujocks was regarded by the leaders of Nazi Germany as a desperado and a thug who could be relied upon to carry out any missions, however dangerous and however disreputable.’—Allied Interrogator, 1944

‘Naujocks is a thug of the New Order. His crimes are many. The man should most certainly be put to death.’ —US Intelligence Officer, 1945

Hitler’s Gangster is the first English-language biography of Naujocks based on secret wartime interrogations and is aimed at the popular history market.
