The Evolution of God is an explosive biography of the enigmatic character whose earthly existence in far distant times inspired a religious belief system that has survived to the present day.
By way of biblical interpretation, the notion of God is taken as read by a great many people, and is equally refuted by many others. But the Bible was not the first collection of books to discuss God. In order to sustain a culture of priestly dominance, the earliest biblical texts were politically distorted versions of historical documents written more than 2,000 years before the book of Genesis.
At the biblical outset God is portrayed as an omnipotent creator. For a while thereafter he is very much an on-the-ground character, walking and talking with others. But he then becomes a mysterious entity who, although reckoned to be omnipresent, is never seen again. At no stage does the Bible identify God’s origin, but the earliest records of God were substantially ignored by the Bible writers in order to foster an environment of religiously motivated control. The Evolution of God explores these ancient records to expose the scribal subterfuge by revealing the influential figure whose controversial legacy shaped emergent biblical lore.
