John Higgs biography

John Higgs has spent 10 years writing and producing in a wide range of media, making him the only man who can boast of producing both a long running series for BBC Radio 4 and a best selling videogame for the PlayStation 2.

He created the innovative historical and geographical quiz show X Marks The Spot for BBC Radio 4. The series has now been running for eight years. Videogames that he has produced include Crash n' Burn (Eidos Interactive, PlayStation 2 and Xbox) and ATV: Quad Power Racing 2 (Acclaim, PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube), which has sold over half a million copies.

In between these very different endeavours he has worked extensively in television and animation, writing and producing programmes including Audrey & Friends (Channel 5, 2001), Pen Monkeys (Channel 4, 2000) and TooMuch TV (Channel 5, 1999), for which he earned a Best Children's Entertainment Programme BAFTA nomination. He has written for publications including The Guardian, The Independent and Mojo, and is a judge in two categories for the BAFTA Games Awards. He has a degree in Computer Science.

He lives in Brighton with his partner and two children.

how I found the agency

I approached finding an agent on the assumption it would be a long hard slog. To start, I went out and bought the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook and sent my proposal to only five of the hundreds of agents listed. My thinking was that a small initial test like this would give me feedback and allow me to improve my pitch for a big mass mail out later. Andrew was one of the first that I wrote down, partly because he came under 'A', and partly because I admired books from a few of the clients he listed. A few days after I posted the proposal, he called. By the time the second agency on my list got in touch, he had already sent out my sample chapter to a professional reader. By the time the third agency on my list got in touch, I had signed with him. I think I must be one of the few writers who have found dealing with representation to be the simplest, most hassle-free parts of writing!
