Exotic Princes: A History of the Maharajas is a new history of the Indian Princes, tracing their story from the glitter of Lord Curzon's Delhi Durbar of 1903, through the trauma of Independence in 1947 to their eventual betrayal and extinction at the hands of the Indian government in 1971. It will look at all aspects of the Prince's lives, their palaces and treasures, their passion for hunting and sports, as well as the way they approached the exercise of the autocratic power that they wielded over their subjects. Exotic Princes will examine the important role that the Princes played in the creation of modern India and the part that they continue to play in its modern life. It will cast new light too on the relationship between the Maharajas and their colonial masters, the British, and the conflict they experienced between east and west. The Maharajas themselves, some well known and some less well known, will be the stars of the book. This is the first recent book in English, drawing on archival and published sources, to attempt a rounded portrait of this ancient, glamorous, and doomed group of Princes.
