Jonny Jacobsen trained as a journalist in the late 1980s with the Birmingham Post and Mail, pursuing an interest in investigative journalism from the start of his career. Several years of freelancing in Scotland included work for The Scotsman, The Herald and The Daily Record and in 1993 he joined the launch team for The Big Issue in Scotland.

In 1994 he moved to Paris to attend the Journalists in Europe programme and stayed on as an editor, coordinating investigations into corruption, industrial safety and the business of sport. He put together his first investigative piece on Scientology in 1996 as a reporter/producer with Radio France International. For The Herald, he covered the mysterious disappearance of key documents in a Scientology court case in France. Other freelance work included an extended feature for GQ magazine on how Iran’s assassination squads operate in Europe.
