In The First Cold War: The Great Game Revived, Saul Kelly seeks to re-examine the generally held view that the Cold War first started in 1947.Using recently released British secret intelligence records and newly-discovered Russian sources, he will show that, following the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, Russia and Britain resumed their struggle for the mastery of Asia, the old Great Game. This ‘First Cold War’ effectively lasted until 1941 and the German attack on Russia, and it came close to toppling the British Empire. For, unlike in the nineteenth century, the Bolsheviks sought to subvert the twin centres of imperial power, Britain and India, at the same time. Focusing on the deadly rivalries of Russian and British secret agents on the frontiers, as much as the high policy discussions in London and Moscow, this study will cast new light on this crucial, and hitherto neglected, period in the Great Game. It will also put into proper perspective the resumption of Anglo-Russian rivalry in Europe and Asia after the Second World War.
