David Morgan biography

David Morgan is the son of a wartime Seafire pilot and was educated at Sir Roger Manwood’s School in Sandwich. His hopes of becoming a pilot like his father suffered an early setback when, at the age of sixteen, he was diagnosed as having a hole-in-the-heart. After having open heart surgery, he achieved his ambition and he flew numerous types of helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft, before qualifying as a Harrier pilot in 1977. Five years later, he served in the Falklands conflict, flying Sea Harriers from the aircraft carrier HMS HERMES. During six weeks of fierce fighting, he shot down four Argentine aircraft and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, a very rare honour for an Air Force pilot.

After the conflict, he remained with the Royal Navy as an Air Warfare Instructor, test pilot and display pilot, retiring in 1992 as one of the Navy’s most experienced Sea Harrier pilots. He now flies Boeing 747s for a living and still entertains the crowds at airshows around the country flying his Russian built Yak 50.

David now enjoys life at his home in the wilds of Dorset, with his wife, Caroline and their two cats. He has two grown-up children from his first marriage.
