Brian Paddick biography

Brian Paddick was born in April 1956, in Balham, South London. He joined the Met in 1976, as a PC in Holloway. Progressing through the ranks, he gained operational experience in Brixton (at the time of the 1981 riots), Lewisham, Notting Hill (with responsibility for policing the carnival) and Merton, in both uniformed and CID roles. He also held staff posts (in Personnel and Training, Management Development and Inspection and Review) at both borough level and within Scotland Yard.

Brian holds a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University and a Masters in Business Administration from Warwick. At Oxford, he was Captain of the University Swimming Team and Vice-Captain of his college’s Rugby team.

At the end of 2000, Brian was promoted to the rank of Commander, moving back to Brixton to take charge of Lambeth’s policing. In achieving this rank, Brian became the most senior, openly gay policeman in the country.

In November 2003, Brian became Deputy Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard, a position he held until his retirement on May 31, 2007.

how I found the agency

"Without any idea about books or publishing I struggled to find the right agent. I did not seem to gel with those who were interested in me and those I liked would not take me on. Another author recommended Andrew and on first meeting I realised that he was right for me. I do not know how he does it but he is invariably there when you need him, usually on the other end of the phone whenever you call."
