Andrew Rose biography

Andrew Rose, with a family background of medicine and Scots Law, was educated in Dorset and at Trinity College, Cambridge. For many years he practised as a barrister in London, specialising in crime. One of Andrew’s earliest briefs was for Charles Kray, elder brother of the notorious twins (he still hasn’t been paid), and he defended celebrated 70s wheelman, George Davis, whose supporters outraged the country by digging up Headingley cricket pitch.Andrew has written two books on crime, Scandal at the Savoy and Stinie – Murder on the Common, which was shortlisted for the non-fiction award of the Crime Writers’ Asociation. He has contributed to radio and TV, including The Last Secret of Dr Crippen, shown recently on Channel Four. In Lethal Witness, Andrew explores the life of Sir Bernard Spilsbury, the first and only “Honorary Pathologist to the Home Office”, who gave crucial evidence in nearly a half-century of classic British murder trials. Spilsbury, a complex and flawed character, pioneered forensic pathology, but his obstinacy and arrogance led to fatal miscarriages of justice.

how I found the agency

"I've had two literary agents. The first wasn't really independent. The other was interested primarily in crime fiction, which caused problems. By 2004, I'd gathered a good deal of material for my current project. A journalist gave me a contact at a large London agency. Crime/biography wasn't this agent's field, but he recommended Andrew Lownie. I checked the website, which was attractively-presented, no-nonsense, and informative. Re-working my proposal and the discipline of condensing each chapter into a page turned out to be a valuable exercise."
