Maxwell's Chain

Bill Lunt had been school photographer at Leighford High for years and his breathtaking views of local beauty spots sold well to tourist and local alike. He spent hours in his darkroom, developing this, enlarging that, until suddenly he snapped a murder. He didn’t realize at first, of course, but when he did, he went straight to Leighford CID. And Leighford CID could do nothing. No body, no proof. No proof, no case.

Then Bill mentioned it to his old acquaintance ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell, who in turn mentioned it to his wife, Jacquie, DS at the local nick. The trio work hard to find Lunt’s murder scene and with it find a body, a bag of Big Issues still slung over its decomposing shoulder.

But murder strikes closer to home when Greg Hampson, one of Maxwell’s Own Sixth Form, is found dead on a park bench after a night on the tiles. Now, it is personal and Maxwell is on his bike, drawn to the dark world of a drug culture where life is cheap and paradise only a fix away.

But what can a homeless girl and well-meaning but dim Greg have in common? Maxwell alone feels that the first links of a chain have been forged in the warm nights of that Leighford summer. Then, an old man is found by passers-by, dying in his doorway, his dog by his side. Commonsense says exposure. But the August night is one of the hottest for years and Maxwell’s chain has another link.
